Learning to drive at 72
A magazine article about a woman who learned to drive in her seventies.
When Margaret Hughes passed her driving test last spring, the examiner shook her hand and told her she was the oldest person he had ever tested. Margaret was seventy-two. For most of her life, Margaret never needed to drive. She lived in the centre of Leeds, where there were buses every few minutes, and her husband, Frank, drove whenever they went further away. Suddenly, she found it hard even to visit her daughter, who lives in a village forty kilometres away. Her grandson Owen offered to teach her, but after two lessons in his small car, they both agreed it was a bad idea. Instead, Margaret booked lessons with a professional instructor called Dev, whose car had an extra brake on the passenger side.Margaret admits the first few weeks were hard. She was nervous on busy roads, and she found it difficult to remember everything at once. By the summer, she was driving to the supermarket with Dev just sitting quietly beside her.She failed her first test because she drove too slowly on the motorway. Three weeks later, she passed with only two small mistakes. Now she drives to see her daughter every Sunday. ‘People told me I was too old to learn,’ she says. ‘I’m glad I didn’t listen to them.’
