For questions 1-8, read the text below and decide which answer (A, B, C or D) best fits each gap.

At the age of forty-three, I finally in to years of quiet longing and bought a cello. I had no illusions about becoming a concert performer; I simply wanted to play a few pieces without driving the neighbours the wall. My teacher, a patient woman in her seventies, no secret of the fact that adults learn differently from children. We are better at understanding theory, she explained, but far more to frustration when our fingers refuse to do what we ask. Children, by contrast, will happily play the same passage over and again until it sounds right. Progress was slow, but every so I would play a phrase that actually sounded like music. Those moments were enough to me going through weeks of scratchy practice. Two years on, I play in an amateur orchestra, where I am in good : half of the cellists took up the instrument in middle age.
