Essay

Write 240-280 words. Summarise and evaluate both texts and add your own ideas.

Write an essay summarising and evaluating the key points from both texts. Use your own words throughout as far as possible, and include your own ideas in your answer. You should write 240–280 words.

文本 1
Extract from a national economics magazine

Supporters of a four-day week argue that productivity does not depend on hours alone. When employees have more time to recover, they return more focused, make fewer mistakes and are less likely to take sick leave. Trials in several countries suggest output can be maintained when organisations redesign workflows, reduce unnecessary meetings and measure performance by results rather than presenteeism. A shorter week could also widen access to work for carers and people with disabilities, helping to address labour shortages. Although some sectors would need phased implementation, proponents claim the long-term gains outweigh the disruption.

文本 2
Commentary from a business owners’ federation newsletter

Critics warn that a universal four-day week ignores the realities of service-based economies. If shops, hospitals and transport systems must remain open, fewer working days may simply require hiring more staff, pushing up costs for small firms already operating on thin margins. Where output is tied to time, not creativity, compressing hours can increase stress and reduce quality. There is also a risk of inequality: highly paid office workers may benefit, while shift workers face heavier workloads or reduced earnings. Opponents argue that flexibility should be negotiated locally rather than imposed nationally.
