Write for an Academic Discussion
You have 10 minutes. Your professor is teaching a class on media studies. Write a post responding to the professor's question. Express and support your opinion and make a contribution to the discussion in your own words. Write at least 100 words.
Over the past twenty years, thousands of local newspapers have closed because advertising money has moved to large internet companies. As a result, many towns no longer have reporters who cover city council meetings, local schools, or courts. Some people suggest that governments should provide funding to keep local news organizations running. Do you think governments should financially support local journalism? Why or why not?
Yes, local news is a public service, like libraries. When nobody is watching local governments, officials can waste money or make poor decisions without anyone noticing. A small amount of public money to keep reporters working seems like a good investment for a healthy democracy.
I think this is risky. The whole point of journalism is to investigate the people in power. If a newspaper depends on the government for money, will it really report on that government's mistakes? I would prefer to see local news supported by readers, through subscriptions or donations.
