The Safety Bicycle

history of transport
In the 1870s, the most fashionable bicycle was the high-wheeler, a machine with a huge front wheel that made it fast but difficult to mount and easy to fall from. Riding it was largely limited to young men willing to the risk. The design that changed this was the so-called safety bicycle of the 1880s, which had two wheels of similar size and a chain that the pedals to the rear wheel. Combined with air-filled tyres, which made riding far more comfortable, it a cycling boom in the 1890s. For many women in particular, the bicycle offered a degree of independent travel that had previously been to them.
